A Letter from the Chief
Thank you for your interest in the Fire Island Pines Volunteer Fire Department. Being a firefighter here is rewarding and challenging. Rewards include being part of a dedicated team, participating in search and rescue drills, responding to neighbors’ emergencies, and having friends appreciate your help. Challenges are ever present: your first class at the Fire Academy; a drill on wild fires here in the Pines; responding to your first alarm and remembering to remain calm and clear headed, following directions and making quick decisions. You’ll be constantly tested as we’re the “first responders.” Volunteering on a warm summer day while others are at the beach or responding to an alarm in the middle of a dinner party tests your commitment. Ultimately, your personal satisfaction will reinforce your decision.
Your first year as a Probationary Member requires a significant time commitment. During this year, you’ll learn the fundamentals of firefighting to ensure you can respond to any emergency and prioritize your safety and the safety of your team.
The application is the first step toward the most satisfying and successful community service you will ever provide.
If you have questions or concerns during the application process, please feel free to contact me anytime.
Good luck, and I look forward to speaking with you soon.
Sincerely,
Chief Kyle Merker
